Perez joined the independent professional wrestling circuit in 2004 and then debuted for WWE in 2005. Initially, she was a manager for the tag team MNM. She managed them to three reigns as WWE Tag Team Champions, as well as Johnny Nitro to two reigns as WWE Intercontinental Champion. Perez made her WWE singles debut in 2005 and is a three-time WWE Women's Champion, winning the belt twice in 2007 and once in 2009. She also captured the WWE Divas Championship on two occasions in 2009 and 2010, making her a five-time champion overall. As a WWE Diva, Perez was noted for her ring entrance, where she jumped up and landed in a splits position on the ring's apron before sliding into the ring underneath the bottom rope. However, her getting fired from the WWE as she was one of the top divas with the company took her completely off guard. She wasn't liking how she was getting used, but the fact they also fired her just pissed her off even more.
Waiting the 90 days out, Melina had a lot to think about, a lot to discuss. Wrestling was her blood, so she had to find another way to do it. Calling her good friend, Beth Phoenix, Melina asked her about the company Beth was currently working for, the GZWA. Melina decided she was going to talk to the owner, Xion Zeros about working in the company.
Going to his office a week or so later, Melina sat down with Xion Zeros and discussed her sole purpose for being here. "I know you got talent, and you may not be looking; but I'm someone you don't want to pass up. You may have the likes of Maryse, Amanda Coretz and even my good friend Beth Phoneix, but none of them are quite like the A List Diva, Mr. Zeros. You give your women wrestler's here nothing but repsect, and shots that other companies would never dream of doing; that draws me here more then anything. I know you've heard the sob story a million times before, but I'm not like other girls. Please, just give me a contract and I can show you there's not another girl on this roster quite like Melina"
