It's several days before the Final Encounter PPV and still no one has seen or heard from Sapphire since her loss to Maryse and subsequent admission about her feelings for Genesis only for him to throw it all back in her face on the last episode of Primetime.
Finally, in the late morning hours, the Crown Jewel of GZWA is spotted walking in the middle of a country road dressed in a polka dot halter top and jean skirt. She's walking kind of slowly, like something is weighing heavily on her mind, and she glances back briefly to see if someone is following her before she continues walking.
The next scene we see is a baseball diamond full of 7-9 year old girls. An 8 year old girl is at home plate, a number 18 embroidered in gold on the back of her black jersey. Her long brunette hair is tied back in a pony tail, covering her last name stitched over her number. She crouches down low into her batting stance, as the pitcher takes aim, hurling a softball full speed. The girl at the plate slightly adjusts to the pitch, before pulling the bat back and crushing the softball high above everyone's head. She starts her run to first base as the pitcher spins around to watch her right fielder go back as far as she can before coming up short, the ball dropping a few feet away. A group of girls in the dugout cheer and scream as the girl who hit the ball continues to run around the bases, finally touching down at home plate several seconds before the catcher tags her with the ball in glove. The catcher throws down her mask in anger, stomping back to the dugout, as the runner stands up and brushes herself off. A huge smile is on her face as the group of girls who were cheering for her earlier come running on the field to congratulate her. She celebrates for a few minutes with her team, before her parents come over and congratulate her, followed by her 11 year old brother who hugs her tightly before letting her go. She heads back to her teammates to continue celebrating, but she turns back to her family, her green eyes glowing with excitement as the scene fades out.
Just as the previous scene fades out, a new one fades in. A 16 year old girl with two other girls around the same age are passing a bottle of vodka between the three of them and laughing. They're in the living room of a house sitting Indian style, with a newspaper clipping between them as some of the conversation because audible.
Oh my gosh, Natalie! That's not what I said and you know it!
Yes, you did, Amber. You told me that FSU was going to get their asses kicked this year because their rival school has an awesome new quarterback starting for their sophomore team.
No, I didn't! I swear, I said they've got some new sophomore quarterback and FSU's gonna have to work extra hard to earn wins. Those were my exact words.
They both turn to the third girl who has the newspaper clipping in her hand. The clipping can be seen with the headline reading "Star Quarterback Signs with FSU Rival," and a picture of the 19 year old college sophomore. She studies the article before taking a big swig from the bottle and passing it over to Natalie. She smiles as she brushes a strand of brunette hair out of her face, examining the teen's picture and gazing over the article. Natalie takes a gulp from the bottle before busting up laughing.
Oh my gosh! I've seen that look before...Someone's in trouble.
The other girl puts the article down seeming to snap out of the trance she was in as she hears her friends words, her green eyes with a lost expression before she realizes what's happening.
What? No! Don't even start!
You like him, don't you? Oh, your brother is going to kill you.
I never said that, and no he isn't. He's not going to know anything because I don't like him! Besides, he'll be out on injury after they play FSU, and you know it!
Amber and Natalie look at each other before busting in hysterical laughing, with the third girl shaking her head as this scene too, fades out.
A new scene slowly fades in and we see a group of people gathered around a casket being lowered into the ground in a cemetery. A 19 year old brunette steps forward, her green eyes are bloodshot and puffy, as tears continue to stream down her face. She reaches her hand out towards the casket as the tears continue to flow uncontrollably. Two blonde girls wearing FSU sweatshirts step forward to console her, before returning to the group.
The group of people disperse, and the three girls share their final hugs before splitting up. The brunette girl slowly walks to a car parked on the side of the road near the grave site. She turns back one more time, brushing a few tears from eyes, still in disbelief. As she does, she notices a young man now standing at the grave site, alone. She recognizes the man as the now 22 year old starting quarterback for FSU's biggest rival school. She'd been to enough of her brother's football games to know the strong hatred between their schools, but realizes that this man doesn't care about the rivalry when he's at the funeral for someone his own age.
She smiles through her tears at the deep level of respect he has, before continuing to walk to her parent's car. She opens the car door, taking one more look at the grave site as she sees the 22 year old man walking on the opposite side of the street, his hands jammed in his jean pockets. He looks up from the ground for a second, and as he does, he locks eyes with the brunette on the other side of the street. He recognized her instantly, and tries to attempt a smile as a peace offering. She wants so badly to say something, but can't find thoughts after what she's been through.
Kristine Leilani Campbell! In the car, now! We're going to be late.
The sharp tone of her mother's voice snaps her out of her thought, as she notices her parents are already in the car. Normally, she would have said something to retaliate, but today wasn't the day to do so. She reluctantly joined her parents in the car, and shut the door. As they drove off, she glanced out the window. The man who she had exchanged a brief glance with was crossing the street, and she didn't take her eyes off him until he was out of view with more tears streaming down her face.
She brushes a tear away from her green eyes, while tucking a strand of brunette hair behind her ear as the camera pans out revealing the woman to be Sapphire in the present moment. She's stopped walking and is now standing with her back to the camera, her eyes focused on the ground. She sits down Indian style, her back still to the camera, as it zooms in over her shoulder to reveal what she's focused on. A black marble headstone is in front of her reading, "RIP Nathan Campbell" in bold print. Below that are the dates, "March 16, 1981 - July 3, 2003" in a cursive script. She leans forward, running her fingers over the engraving.
Hey, Nate. I know it's been awhile. I know I said that I'd visit more, but I guess things have been a little crazy for me.
I thought about you a lot on the way here. I remember the first home run that I'd ever hit in softball and how even though you told Mom and Dad the whole way home that it wasn't a big deal because you'd hit several in your baseball game, I still remember you how tightly you hugged me after that game ended.
I thought about the day Amber and Natalie and I first got drunk together. Gosh, we were so stupid and I was so sick the next morning. I remember you telling me that it was because I read that news clipping too many times. Good times, right?
Then, I thought about all this...I can't believe it's been almost 10 years, Nate. I think the worst part of it all isn't the time in between. It's the here and now. I know I told you that I started fighting competitively in GZWA and that I'd seen Gen---Brandon a couple of times. Well, the guy's turned into a complete asshole. I swear it's Maryse's doing, but to be honest, I don't even care why he's acting like this. Mariah says he's got a heart somewhere in there, but I haven't seen it since you--Well, you know he was here that day.
I just feel like I've let you down. The whole reason that I got into this business is because we've always loved wrestling. We've always been athletic. We've always said that nothing is going to stop us...and now that I'm finally where I want to be in a company that I can make it as a female inspiration. A company where I can really show how badly I want to be the first female GZWA Heavyweight Champion and show that I'm not a diva, what happens? I see Brandon and turn into everything that I've tried so hard to distance myself from. The drama, the emotions, all the bullshit...He just has something about him that causes everything inside me to crumble.
You know what though, Nate? As I walked here, all the things I thought of, everything that I've busted my ass for, it's all right here. I'm not doing this to get back at the times FSU got their ass kicked. I'm not doing this for the times Maryse was a total bitch. I'm sure as hell not doing this for Brandon. I'm doing this for me...and for you.
Starting today, I refuse to live in the past. I've done that way too long, and it hasn't gotten me anything. I have goals in that company and I'm setting out to achieve them.
Final Encounter is a few days away and I have Maryse in a match one on one. After what she and Lise Starr did to me the last two episodes of Primetime, it's about time I return the favor. I know Little Lisey's going to get what she deserves after Mei Long retains gold, but it's up to me to take care of Maryse.
Well, Mariah gave me this match because she knows what I'm capable of. She knows that I've beaten men and women in that ring, and she knows that I'm not one to let my emotions get in the way of what I want. Well, what I want is to be at the top of GZWA. What I want is to do what I set out in this company to do. I'm going to get in that ring and give that bitch one hell of a fight. Not for what's been done to me in the past. Not for her relationship with Brandon. Not for any other reason than to send a message that I'm the Crown Jewel of GZWA...and I'm going to do it for me this time.
She stands up slowly, brushing grass off her legs. She takes another look at the head stone, before looking up to the heavens with a smile as the scene fades to black.
