Earlier in the week:
A miserable and ticked off Lise Starr sits in a large psychologist’s office in a circle of chairs filled by many people. Married couples, siblings, friends. The left seat next to Lise was empty for now. Suddenly, the door behind her slams open, revealing AJ Lee, who had just kicked the door open. Wearing a cap, she leans it forward. “Sorry I’m late, guys. I was getting my throat checked because of a... recent mishap.“ She speaks while shifting her eyes in Lise's direction. With her hands in her back pockets, she skips over to the empty chair, glancing at Lise with a wide and smug grin, quietly muttering “Hey sis.” as she sits down. Lise holds onto the bottom of the seat and she grits her teeth. “I am only doing this because I was forced. I just got my job back, I can’t risk losing it again.”
AJ giggles as she removes her cap and plants it on Lise’s head and ruffles it over her hair. “Whatever you say, Lisey... Whatever you say.” Lise takes the hat off of her head and throws it to the floor. “When is this thing starting? I want it over and done with...” As soon as Lise ends her sentence, a man appearing in his 40’s enters the room.
“Hi and welcome to relationship therapy. My name is Dr. Shelby and today I will be helping all of you improve the relationship with your loved one. Either it be your husband and wife, your brother or sister and even a friend.” Lise instantly facepalms. “You gotta be kidding me...” Meanwhile, AJ’s face lights up and she enthusiastically waves. “Hey doc! It’s me, AJ! You gave therapy to my exes!” She turns to Lise and claps excitedly. “We’re gonna be besties again!” Groaning, Lise rubs her forehead. “Why? Why does this have to happen to me? Was I a serial killer in a past life?”
Dr. Shelby interrupts. “Now now, Lise don’t be so negative. I am here to help you. Your workplace told me that you and AJ used to be best friends, for the past few months, the two of you had a fallout. Now ladies, we are going to ask everybody here why they feel the way they do about their partner and why things went sour. Lise, you can start us off.” Lise looks around the group and begins. “Okay, I can do this. AJ and I were best friends. She had a weird boyfriend who beat her, during the time I was there for her. He soon had a breakdown cause he couldn’t get his way and dumped AJ. Me being a good friend, I continued to support her. Eventually she became obsessed with me, the obsession got more bizarre once I started dating a guy. Then one day she beat me up, leaving me in a bloody mess.”
The entire group gasps. “That is pretty intense but Lise, I am going to make sure that will never happen with you and AJ again. AJ, you may go next.” During Lise’s speech, AJ had appeared to begin crying, covering her face from the group and giving herself a moment to regain her composure. “Okay... I had a boyfriend, like she said. He hurt me, and he made me feel worthless. Then I was friends with Lise, and she made me feel so much happier. After my guy left me, she really helped. Then, she had a drinking problem, which she didn’t mention earlier... And I tried to help her, because I wanted to make it up to her. But she started to associate herself with someone I know is bad news, and when I tried to tell her, she’d make fun of me behind my back and keep going with him! She ended up hurting me too, so I kind of lashed out on her... But... I tried to apologise, and I really meant it with all of my heart! And then she went and kicked me in the face and broke my heart...” She covers her face again and begins to sob, or so it would appear.
Many people in the group feel sympathy for AJ, even the other person next to her placing their hand on her shoulder. Meanwhile Lise has a look of disgust on her face. “What!?” Dr Shelby gets off his seat and walks to AJ. “Don’t be afraid to release your pain, AJ. It’s completely natural.” Lise interrupts. “But doc, she’s faking it. Look at those damn crocodile tears!” Dr. Shelby replies. “No Lise! Don’t act like that to your best friend, you need to learn to let AJ have the chance to let out her feelings.” Lise tries to speak. “But... but...” Suddenly, an older woman sitting near Lise interrupts. “Quiet! Haven’t you upset her enough?” With a look of disbelief, Lise starts shaking her head while Dr. Shelby sits back on his seat. “Veronica, it’s now your turn to speak. Tell us how you feel about your sister.”
. . .
Later in the day, entire group sits in the seats with a notepad and pen in hands. “I hope that is enough time I gave you all to list down the flaws which you wish your partner could work on and improve at. Ben, what is something you would like your wife to work on?” A dark-haired man speaks. “Sometimes I feel she is a little too naggy. I come home from work and she’s bugging me to clean the garage, fix the laundry sink. I work for five days a week, seven hours every day. She needs to give me a break.” The blonde haired woman sitting next to him speaks. “I work hard as well. I clean the kids, raise them, feed them. I do the laundry, I do the cooking, I run the errands.” Her husband answers back. “I do hard labour, I deserve to rest after a day of work.”
“You deserve rest? What about me?” The woman answers back. Dr. Shelby then speaks. “Ben and Vera, you can both do things like helping out each other, perhaps making a schedule. Your children are toddlers, aren’t they? You can even take them to a daycare if Vera has a lot to do around the house.” The couple remains silent before nodding in agreement. Dr. Shelby then pays attention to AJ and Lise. AJ is doodling on her notebook while Lise’s notebook is sitting on her lap as she texts on her mobile phone. “Ladies, it’s your turn. Lise, did you write anything on your book?” Lise speaks while paying attention to her phone. “Uh huh. I wrote like, everything in one minute.” Dr. Shelby replies. “May I ask you to put your phone away?” Lise sighs, putting it away.
AJ raises her arm with childlike innocence. “I wrote somethin’ doc. Well... I kind of, sort of, drew Lisey’s flaws, if that’s okay.” With this, AJ raises her notebook and turns it around, revealing an over the top caricature of Lise with wild hair, a sharp witch like nose and an evil look on her face while holding a love heart with a drawing of AJ lying under her with a slit on her chest and X’s for eyes. While showing her drawing, she glares at Lise, a slight sinister smirk on her face. “Oh wait, one more thing.” She then drops the second page of the notebook, revealing that she had written on the entire page “SHE HAS A FAT ASS” in large text. Rolling her eyes, Lise mumbles. “Crazy bitch.” Lise then places her phone in her pocket and opens up the notebook.
“Alrighty, where do I begin? AJ has a lot of flaws. Starting with the big number one. She is crazy, I’m not even kidding. She needs mental help. AJ is very delusional, she believes that we were meant to be together, she thinks that I’m fat despise being the same size as her. She thinks my obviously dark-brown hair is red. Oh yeah, AJ also has a massive tantrum whenever she can’t get her way. She uses “crazy” as an excuse for those tantrums but when somebody else calls out her craziness, she snaps.” Lise clears her throat and continues looking at the list. “She will not leave me alone, she burned my things, tied me up in my very own apartment. Dr. Shelby, put her in a mental hospital, please!” The group looks horrified as Dr. Shelby speaks. “I will be honest here... that is a whole bunch of flaws that you need to work on, AJ.”
AJ shrugs. “She had it coming. Lisey here never mentions that despite all of these things, I have tried several times to make it up to her, and be her friend again, and everytime I do, she spits it back at me like some kind of snake. She hurts me, I fight back. What am I gonna do, just sit back and cry as she hurts me? I just wanted her love, and instead I’m where I sent my ex boyfriends when they couldn’t deal with me anymore! You’ve ruined me, Lise! You’ve turned me into a monster!” After venting her anger, AJ lies back on her chair, rubbing her eyes and sighing. Clearly having enough of AJ’s shit, Lise answers back, mocking AJ. “My boyfriends didn’t love me! Waaah, waaaah!” Lise chuckles, then gets more serious. “Get over it. We all have dated assholes, I was on the receiving end of beatings, gaining bruises and bleeding.”
“Did I think he was the most amazing guy and continued loving him? Yes I did until I realised he was a goddamn horrible person so I left him. There was plenty more fish in the sea. Do I use all that trauma as an excuse to act like a fool? Nope.” Lise says, glaring at AJ. “You should have known a lot better when Mr. Goatface ditched you years ago, instead you go attacking your then-best friend. Oh, and then in a brand new company... the EXACT same thing happens.”
AJ glares at Lise as though she intends to literally bite her head off, staring directly into her eyes while her nostrils flare angrily. “How about I make my former best friend into the smallest chunk of meat in the world right now...” Lise chuckles. “Predictable. Little Miss. AJ can’t handle the truth.” Dr. Shelby cuts in. “L-Ladies that’s enough.” AJ puts her hand out to tell Dr. Shelby to shut up as she continues glaring at Lise. “You want the truth? I HATE YOU. I think meeting you was the worst mistake I’ve ever made in my life. If you were never born, I would have been happy!”
“Ha! You hate me? I’m glad you do cause I hate you too! I wish I never met you. You did nothing but annoy me and be a pain in my ass!” Lise yells back at AJ while Dr. Shelby tries to stop the two fighting. “Ladies. This isn’t helping.” Both women turn and look at Dr. Shelby with their respective glares, with AJ bending her head. “Okay, doc. What do you think WOULD help?” Dr. Shelby yells back. “You girls need to stop fighting and arguing!” This makes both women quietly go silent, with mousy expressions on their faces.
. . .
Returning after a short lunch break, everyone sits back on their seats as Dr. Shelby goes back into the room. “Everyone, can you move your seats back a little? This exercise requires standing up.” The group listens and gets off their seats, pushing the chairs away and they all stand in a circle. “We are going to do an exercise where we learn more about how to trust our partner. Your partner will stand behind you and you will fall back, then your partner has to catch you.” Dr. Shelby says as an African-American man speaks with his girlfriend next to him. “Dr. Shelby are you sure it’ll be fine this time?” Dr. Shelby turns to the man. “Harold, there is nothing to worry about!”
AJ awkwardly strokes her arm as she glances at Lise. “So... Do you wanna... Or should I... How the hell are we gonna do this?” She sighs and rubs her hair while Lise rubs her head, knowing this is a bad idea. “I don’t care.” AJ takes a deep breath while folding her arms. “You go first, I’ll catch you. I swear.” Sighing, Lise stands in front of AJ. “Fine... I’ll fall first.” Dr. Shelby and the group look at Lise and AJ. “These ladies here can be an example. Go Lise, fall and AJ will catch you.” The reluctant Lise nods, then slowly falls back with AJ successfully catching her, having her arms under Lise’s shoulders. After grabbing her, she pulls her up slightly, whispering in her ear. “Never doubt me, sis. Here’s a little something for you...” She teases her former friend by very briefly groping her before sliding her hands behind her back and stepping forward, a grin on her face to the group. “I’m a good girl, see?”
She skips in front of Lise and extends her arms out, slowly letting herself drop backwards. Lise holds her arms out to catch AJ but then she looks out the window, quickly moving her arms away. “Ooooh, a cute puppy!” AJ’s eyes widen as she realises Lise will not catch her and lets out a decisively unfeminine yell as she slams on her back. As the group crowd around her, she looks up at Lise with her teeth gritted while still lying on the ground. “You did that on purpose, you ginger asshole! Help me up!” Lise grins for a brief second at AJ before changing her smirk to a fake apologetic expression. “Oh my god, I am so sorry! I just get so distracted when I see a cute animal! It was a Maltese x Shih Tzu!” Lise pulls AJ up by the arm.
“Ladies, maybe we can try it again later when there’s no animals walking outside.” Dr. Shelby says before Harold starts freaking out in front of his annoyed girlfriend. “See! I told you doc, this was a bad idea! It’s gonna happen to me again, I just know it.” Rubbing the back of her head, AJ rolls her eyes and turns around. “Oh my god... SHUT UP HAROLD!” She screams, jumping to emphasise her anger.
. . .
After some time has passed, the rest of the group has been allowed to leave, with Dr. Shelby keeping AJ and Lise behind to speak to them alone for a moment. Lise stands with her arms folded and she chews on bubblegum while AJ stands on her tip toes with her hands behind her back and a blissfully unaware expression as her eyes roll. “Ladies it took all day but I think the two of you have improved your relationship!” Dr. Shelby says with a smile. “Is there anything you have to say? Lise?” He looks to Lise who simply shrugs. “Err... yay?” She says with an unenthusiastic tone in her voice. “Thanks... I guess?” AJ nods unenthusiastically. “Sure thing, doc. Whatever you say.”
Dr. Shelby nods. “Well, I have to leave to pick up my son from school. Nice meeting you Lise, and it was great seeing you again AJ.” AJ waves nonchalantly as he walks out of the room and leaves Lise on her own with AJ. “How the hell didn’t Kane or D-Bryan kill him? Ugh, thank Jebus this is over.” AJ shrugs. “Hey, at least it’s over, right? We do probably have to deal with those other losers on Primetime though. I don’t know about you Lisey, but I would rather go into the pay per view not looking like an idiot.” Lise rolls her eyes. “Speaking of the pay-per-view, I still haven’t decided what kind of match I will kill you in. You see, I could have ripped out your organs already but I’m saving that fun for later when I have the perfect legal opportunity.”
AJ chuckles for a moment while folding her arms. She leans forward with a smile. “Of course you could, sis. While I’m sure both of us have spilling each other’s blood on our minds for our match, we should let it go if we actually want to get our hands on each other. Deal?” She extends her hand out formally. Briefly taking a short moment to sigh, Lise extends her hand and shakes AJ’s. As they shake hands, AJ grins at Lise. “I missed our time as sisters, Lise. It’ll be good to be The Heartbusters again for one last day and beat some heads in. Petite power, right?” Lise grins back after letting go of AJ’s hand. “Nope. Petite power ended a looong time ago.”
This makes AJ sigh and put her hands on her hips. “Alright then. In that case... We’re gonna win our match, and when we do, you better be ready. Because as soon as that bell rings and our arms are raised, I’m going for your pretty little head.” AJ grins sadistically until Lise punches AJ in the face sending her to the floor. “Hmm... nah. I’m gonna go for your pretty head. Hope you liked that little preview I gave. See you on Friday, “sis”!” Turning around to leave, Lise starts to head out of the room while taking out her phone and dialing on it. She raises it to her ear.
“Oh hey... Yup it’s finally over... Of course, what do you expect from that crazy bitch?” Lise exits the room while AJ crawls up to a standing position, using one of the chairs to balance herself. Giving a death glare to Lise as she leaves, AJ strokes her nose and she takes a look at her finger, seeing a dab of blood on it. Her expression changes into a smile as she watches Lise close the door. “See you on Friday...”
