Mariah sighs heavily as she sets down her bags after returning home to her New York City penthouse apartment. Between dropping everything on her agenda to be with her friend at the hospital to spending the holiday with her siblings, she hasn’t seen much of this place over the last few days. The apartment was still in the mess that she left it in - dishes still in the sink, clean laundry waiting to be folded, mail stacked up on the dresser.
Mariah groans, “This is going to be a long night. Merry Christmas to me… I know the front office isn’t going to be happy about me dropping everything last weekend to be with Drake and Queen at the hospital, tending to Angelica. At least, Angelica still gave me that autographed poster so I guess that might iron things out since Z’s such a big fan...”
Not soon after she has a few minutes to inhale the relaxation, the doorbell rings. Mariah wonders who it is as she inches close to it.
“Who the hell would know I’m back already?”
“Open the door, biatch!”
Mariah opens the door to see one of her Queen Bee besties, Morgan Davis, with a large Christmas bag in her hand. Morgan greets as loud as usual.
“Haaaayyy….”
But she’s quick to notice fatigue in her eyes.
“Uh oh. Now I know I don’t see a sad face today. What’s goin on?”
Mariah fakes smile and invites Morgan in as Morgan struts inside, “Hey, what’s up? I didn’t expect any visitors so soon after tweeting out that I was back home...”
Mariah rubs her eyes as she continues, “I’m just a little tired - physically and mentally. A good night’s rest and I’ll be able to bounce back. Between staying with Angelica at the hospital in Florida to jumping on a flight for Atlanta to be with my familia for Christmas then back here in NYC to pack for the show in Texas, I’m just a little jetlagged ‘tis all.”
“Ooh, girl. I heard about Angelica.”, she commented before sitting on the nearest couch from the door - a loveseat. “Is she doin okay?”
Mariah sighs, “She has some minor memory loss from that day she took that nasty spill but other than that she’s doing better. She’s back to her normal self so that’s a plus. How are you? What mischief did you get into for the holidays?”
“Girl, just some ol’ family stuff. Drinking, partying, talking loud and shit. The usual. My brother and his wife came from Miami to visit. Oh by the way….”
Morgan lifts the Christmas bag higher into the air at Mariah’s direction.
“This is for you, hun!”
Mariah sits down on the couch and unwraps the gift. Her eyes widen and she leans over to hug Morgan.
“Thank you so much! You know I’ve had my eye on these heels for a while now. Now the problem is going to be shopping for something to go with them and where am I going to put them. My closet is already full enough as it is.”
“That’s the idea, honey. You are not supposed to see the carpet in your house. You have to cover it.”
While the two laughed at Morgan’s joke, Mariah stood up and walked into her bedroom before returning shortly with a gift bag.
“I managed to have some time to pick up something for you and Tia. It’s not much, but I hope you like it.”
“Aww, thank you!”
Morgan digs through the paper inside of the bag to see a folded shirt, or what she believed it to be, until she pulled it out. This shirt’s fabric begins to lengthen into what it really is. A long yellow V-neck dress with a long slit on the left side. The V neck was so low that most of her midriff would be showing under the dress. That feature is the most interest part, and excites Morgan.
“Oh yas, girl! A long V-neck dress. You know my tatas have to sit, and they sure as hell will in this dress. I’m surprised that you knew what my size was.”
Mariah laughs, “We share a dressing room, silly! Of course I peeked to make sure I was getting the right size for your assets. I figured it’s the least I could do after my sister ruined your outfit on the last show.”
She sank down a bit on the couch before continuing, “Speaking of my family, we played nice for our mother’s sake as I think she’s the only person in the world we all fear pissing off. It was bad enough that she was cursing in both Spanish AND German to Amanda on Thanksgiving. Poor girl didn’t even bother to show up for Christmas - not that I can blame her. Our mom is tough as nails - despite everything our deadbeat dad has done, she’s taken all of us in as her own.
She paid for putting Jaser through school even though he wasn’t her biological son and even paid for Amanda’s rehab when she was poisoning herself with drugs despite that Amanda wasn’t her own daughter either. Amber and I didn’t have much growing up but we had enough - we knew that our mom loved us.
I strive everyday to be at least half the woman she is.”
“Girl, as much as I can relate to that shit, I can’t, because my daddy was actually around in the house. We were scratching and surviving like good times, but they made sure the kids were straight. Seems the only outsider though was my ass…..for obvious reasons. I guess my brother smokin weed counts, too, I guess.”
“Outsider? You’re one of the most down-to-earth people I have had the pleasure of meeting. Sure, you’re brutally honest about everything, but people NEED to hear the truth.”
“You know. Some of these hoes just don’t want to hear the truth. Let’s be real. Cheeka, Kat, Karen, Paige, AJ Lee, Lise, your sisters. Also your busy ass schedule. You’ve been through that experience before Queen Bee Mafia even existed, so I’m sure you’re used to that shit anyways. To the point that it doesn’t even phase you...”
Mariah looks away from Morgan for a second, but Morgan quickly catches on.
“At least I hope it doesn’t...”
Mariah looks away and the mention of those names, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m fine.”
Morgan pries deeper, “Mariah… Marisol, talk to me. I’m your bestie. I can tell that you’re hurting. You can fool everyone else but I won’t let you blow what could be your only opportunity at the title just because you’re kicking yourself about things you possibly can’t control. Girl, I love you like family but you’re not Wonder Woman. You can’t save everyone. All that I’m asking you is for once - help yourself and win that title. Give us all something to be proud of.”
Mariah stares blankly, “Cheeka left because she almost lost her daughter thanks to her alcohol addiction. If I didn’t bring her back into this business then she wouldn’t have been tempted to drink again. Kat left because of me - I turned her away and that led to her self-destructive thoughts and aggressive traits to re-emerge after we spent so much time to get her to open up to us and others. Karen left because of me - I didn’t challenge her enough so she went elsewhere. I failed her as a rival. Paige, AJ Lee, Lise… I failed them as a role-model for this division and as a friend. Angelica got herself messed up and wound up in the hospital. If I was a better friend, then maybe I could have been there to prevent her getting hurt. I should have seen that something was wrong that led to her drinking so much. Then my sisters, I don’t even know where to begin with how I failed them as their family...”
Morgan cuts her off, “Stop it! Stop doing this to yourself. You aren’t responsible for everyone’s mistakes in life. I swear, I hate how you have so much empathy for everyone. If the good Lord put an angel on this Earth, then it must be you. I have never seen anyone with so much compassion and caring for everyone in her life. Girl, I can’t have you falling apart on me this close to Dead or Alive.
I hate to spring this on you now but we’re booked for Livewire this week. We’re teaming up to face Amber and Jaser.”
Mariah’s eyes widen, “No, I can’t… Why did this monster do this to me? I’m not going to take out my own brother just to cater to his sick, twisted idea of entertainment.”
Morgan shrugs, “I’m guessing it’s his way of repaying you after cancelling all of your appearances to be with Angelica at the hospital at the spur of the moment like that before the holidays.”
Mariah hands begin to shake until Morgan sighs loudly before slapping her hard across the face. Mariah falls to the floor from the sheer force of the blow. She glares at Morgan with fire in her eyes as she sat on all-fours.
Morgan stood up and extended a hand to help Mariah back to her feet. Mariah held her reddened cheek briefly before accepting the gesture.
“Thanks, Morgan. I dunno what came over me… I had a moment of weakness there. I’m glad you were here to knock me back to reality.
So what’s the game plan for this thing?”
Morgan smiled, "Simple. We WIN."
Mariah groans, “This is going to be a long night.
