Not in her usual environment of the ring the Rockin' Interviewer Christy Hemme was sitting in in a studio today, located at GZWA’s Headquarters. In front of her was a desk with two mugs with the GZWA logo and behind - a big monitor displaying the logo of GZWA's Hot Spot. No cue cards, no script. Tonight the interview was going to take on the style of a podcast. The first ever in the company. Microphones were set, the lights were shining bright, the crew ready and eager to start as Christy now turned her attention to the camera in order to kick-off the show.
Christy: Hello and welcome all of you lovely fans of GZWA. I am your beloved Rockin' Interviewer Christy Hemme, yet the show today is a tad different. Usually, Hot Spot is a live interview show with wrestlers right in the middle of that ring that they wrestled in hours, or even minutes, earlier. But, tonight it was decided to launch a tad of a revamped version. And all of this should be attributed to a very certain guest. Tonight, I am joined by the mastermind and puppeteer of our company, the man who runs the asylum, as Serena Dent likes to put it... He is The Fighting Dreamer, although more in legal form these days, GZWA Owner, Xion Zeros.
Xion Zeros: Thank you, Miss Hemme. Such a thorough introduction for me. (Laughs) Sounds like someone has been doing their homework. It's a crazy job but someone has to be the warden over the inmates in this asylum. Normally, the Hot Spot is a GZWA.com exclusive and I'm honored that you selected me to be your guest on this live edition following Primetime. I have wonder what inclined you to want to interview me?
Christy: Well, we know quite a bit about our wrestlers. We know about the short lived fling between Delta Madison and Chris Matthews, we seen Amanda's ventures into BDSM modelling and we even got to see very personal moments from the lives of Mariah and Raven on "Total Vixens". But the management of GZWA are quite a mysterious bunch. Serena Dent only after 2 years did release an official photo from her wedding. And with you we see glimpses here and there, but as we all know, most if it is on screen heat to fuel storylines. The GZWA universe and even most of us working here have a ton of questions about Xion Zeros, but not enough answers.
Xion: Fair enough. As many of you know, I have a daughter so I tend to keep my private life separate from my onscreen persona. I accepted this interview as a means of allowing the GZWA Nation and my employees a bit more about the man behind the madness that is Ground Zero Wrestling Association. Sure, I'll be making some sporadic appearances on "Total Vixens" whenever that returns on television, but I'm sure the fans will complain that they don't get to see enough of the "real" me.
Christy: To start off getting to know the real man behind this persona we see on the TV screens... We know that Xion Zeros is not your stage name, but your actual birth name. How did your parents choose such a standout moniker?
Xion: After years of performing in the ring under the moniker of Zero-X or rather ZX for short, I felt that since GZWA was a fresh start in a lot of ways it was appropriate that I started going by my legal name. My family always had a taste for the dramatic, so I guess it runs in the family.
Christy: Speaking about family... You started your career together with your friend, who we know you consider a brother, T-Bone. How did two young guys from South Carolina decide to start wrestling in the indies? Were you both athletes in school or just fell in love with the business watching classic wrestling matches?
Xion: Pretty much the latter. We were working odd jobs to afford for training and wrestling every weekend across the Carolinas when we weren't busy with school. Mariah was with us those days too. We were a pretty close knit gang back then. My first match was with Mariah as my tag team partner in a mixed tag team match. I'm sure it's on YouTube somewhere. We went as Ace and Amber then. (Shudders) God that match was awful. We were so green back then…
He adds, "T-Bone joined up with us shortly afterwards and we all decided to run as a tag team instead. I'm sure everyone should remember our antics from the early days of ZXWWF and our short run in New Blood Wrestling."
Christy: What was the most memorable match from that quite long run in the indies?
Xion: "I don't have one but a series of matches. That honor goes to the countless number of TLC matches we ran against G-Money & Dequan, currently working in GZWA as the Enforcers, and Matt and Psycho Sagus, also working in GZWA as the Mega Busters. Every other promotion we ended up getting booked for had us running TLC matches every other weekend since we all had so much chemistry together. I'm glad that I was able to talk those guys to come back and work for me now that they have even more experience underneath their belts. I'm anxious to see how they mesh with our budding tag team division."
Christy: You guys were on the rise as professional wrestlers, still in the prime of your careers, as you decided to open your own wrestling promotion, ZXWWF. How did the idea came into fruition? Were you disappointed with the promotions you worked in and saw what could be changed and done differently?
Xion: I got sick of seeing idiots take advantage of talent and I knew I could run a company better than most of the people calling themselves owners out there. I wasn't born into money, so I had to find someone with some deep pockets who would be willing to invest into my crazy idea. Enter Mary Elizabeth Joyner, none other than woman who is known as Scary Mary. We ran into each other on the indies a few times and she bought into my idea, literally. She loved the idea as she wanted to have a wrestling home-away from home, so she backed me financially while I handled all of the messy details that she didn't want to be troubled with. The first promotion that we ran together was ZXWWF. Bad name I know, but it started as a joke or a play on words, meaning "ZX's WWF". After a while, it stuck and we just went with it. For the first few years of that company, I worked simultaneously as an active competitor and as the owner behind the scenes. I hired an authority figure to fill that role on television that most ZXWWF fans will remember as Darrius Lewis or D-Mob.
When I started Ground Zero Wrestling Association, I already had more than enough profits from ZXWWF's success to start this company out of my own pocket. Mary still considers this place her home, but she's not holding the place together with her own money like in the past. I know she's never going to allow me to live that down until the day I die.
Christy: That actually makes sense of why Mary seemed so protective over the business and tried to be a true authority figure both solo and with the help of the Entourage. How did Justice came into the picture? Back in ZXWWF she was a crown jewel performer, but when we first saw her here, she was a co-owner…
Xion: When ZXWWF ended, I took a brief break between wrestling and just about everything else to sort my head from the angst of those last few months. Justice and I stayed in contact - much like I did with a select few alumni and veterans from that promotion. When GZWA started, we decided to continue what we started with The Legion faction in the closing years of ZXWWF. I named Justice an on-air authority figure and things came to a head between us when the role went to her head - on AND off-camera. I personally felt like the role was holding her back when she clearly wanted to be an in-ring performer again instead of filing papers and sitting in an office all day. To the dismay of the GZWA Nation, we quietly parted ways and dissolved our partnership. I humbly wish her only the best with whatever she is up to nowadays.
Christy: But there are still two divas from the days of ZXWWF, who were both active in ring competitors and now are authority figures in GZWA: the current commissioner Serena Dent, who wrestled under the ring name "The Kiss of Death" Evan and our own Showstoppin' Senorita Mariah, who is the head trainer for the company, while still continuing to be an active in-ring performer. Firstly, after your falling out with Mariah on a personal level and eventual break up, how did you convince her to come back into the squared circle?
Xion: Mariah... or rather Marisol Cruz, have been friends for majority of our lives. We've dated off and on, had our disagreements here and there, but at the end of the day we want the same thing when it comes to wrestling. We want to see the best of the best compete here in GZWA and we're not going to settle for less. Getting her to sign to GZWA was a bit of a chore though as she was ready to retire after ZXWWF closed its doors. I had only notified a select few in advance and she wasn't one of them. I'm sure a lot of people from ZXWWF and in the wrestling world still hold resentment towards me over that decision, but what can I say? I'm not here to be a people pleaser.
I got Mariah to sign with a bit of bait. Karen Beth Zurich had already signed when I spoke to her at the last ZXWWF event. For those who don't know their history, allow me to brush them up a bit. KBZ embarrassed not just Lise Starr at that event, but Mariah as well as her own plotting backfired against her. Off-camera, those three were bummed that they wouldn't get a chance to work together again and continue what they started at ZXWWF's last show. When word got out that KBZ signed with GZWA, Lise and Mariah followed suit just out of anticipation to continue their rivalry. Mariah wasn't too pleased to be working for me again, but I sweetened the deal by making her the head trainer over our women's division and she's responsible for scouting talent. Given her reputation, Mariah is valued asset to this company - in and out of the ring.
I had high hopes for Serena as an in-ring performer, but she was dead set on focusing on the behind the scenes duties. She found her knack as an authority figure. The commissioner role fits her like a glove.
Christy: Talking about the people you surrounded yourself with in this company, we can notice it mostly being women. Not surprising, you both on screen and off are known as quite the ladies man. Yet, we all saw on live television you proposing to the mother of your child, Brooklyn Glamorous. How did you two meet and start a relationship, knowing about the length of your relationship with Mariah?
Xion laughs, "Ironically, Mariah was the one who introduced us to each other when we were in high school. Everything was great between us until we had a nasty argument concerning my interest in opening my own wrestling company. We broke up then and went our separate ways for the years to come before we were reunited here in GZWA. Everything you saw on TV was real - I had no idea that Brooklyn gave birth to my daughter, Tiana. I found out about that the same time as the GZWA Nation. Brooklyn still holds some resentment towards Mariah for dating me after our fallout, but I hope the two can learn to coexist.
Brooklyn and I still argue a bit - not as much as we used to, but in our maturity we have realized that we lash out verbally at each other because we both care so much. Besides, we both agree that our daughter deserves to have both of her parents in her life. We have been living together for quite some time now, so it's natural we take our relationship to the next level.
Christy smiles as she hears about the successful relationship between Xion and Brooklyn. Taking a quick sip of water, she looks back up at Xion continuing the interview.
Christy: Is Tiana interested in professional wrestling? Maybe she wants to be a wrestler or work behind the scenes?
Xion: Tiana adores everything the GZWA roster does in the ring, as well what I do behind the scenes to make it happen. For now, I think she's content watching from the audience. Either way, Brooklyn and I will support her no matter what she decides to do with her life when she grows up.
Christy: Did your parents support you choosing to enter the dangerous world of professional wrestling?
Xion: They were skeptical at first with me putting my body on the line on a regular basis, but they always supported me in whatever I put my mind towards.
Christy: But aren't all parents at least a tad skeptical about their child entering that ring? I remember my parents freaked out when they saw my first official match. My father almost tried to knock out the door to Vince McMahon's office after it. How did you, Xion, avoid getting signed to WWE or WWF for that matter?
Xion: Ah I remember those days with my mother furious that I would come home with black eyes and multiple bruises from training. (Whistles) She was ready to raise hell.
Mariah, T-Bone, and I all had developmental contracts working as enhancement talent for them at house shows and dark matches. Eventually we got sick of working as punching bags and going nowhere in our careers. Sometimes you have to take a shot in the dark and see what happens. I like to live my life without regrets.
Christy: But even the best of us do have some kind of regrets. Is there anything you regret doing or not doing in GZWA? Someone you hired, someone you fired or maybe just a match idea that didn't come to fruition?
Xion thought for a moment before answering, "Hmmm, there's some individuals that I regret that we fell into bad terms with and departed ways. I regret not being able to reconcile our differences and come to a mutual agreement. Then there's other individuals who had good reputations here but one act tarnished their legacies. I just don't want my legacy here to go down with everyone not acknowledging that I put my heart and soul into this company.
Ideas come and go, but Tiana keeps bugging me about if I'm going to wrestle again. It has to be for the right angle and perfect timing. I'm at the point of my career where I don't need to hog the spotlight from everyone else. If it's going to help the younger stars become bigger stars then I'm all for it. Otherwise, I don't see any reason of risking my health out there.
Christy: Maybe a tag team run with T-Bone?
Xion shook his head, "As far as what I know, T-Bone said he's retired for good. He still helps out with training at our wrestling school that we co-own with Mariah, but that's about it. We still talk a lot regularly, but I think his days of competing are pretty much over. He’s pretty gung-ho about that and has his mind made up about it."
Christy: Not long ago you announced about coming out of retirement and wrestling at Golden Reign Elite Pro's tribute show. What spiked the desire to stand in that ring once more? Is this only a single occasion or may we see you competing more often?
Xion sighed, “This is an unique opportunity. I told myself that I wouldn’t wrestle in my own company because I don’t want to take any of the spotlight away from our hard working roster. They deserve it more than me. This opportunity to wrestle for Golden Reign Elite Pro is a honor to pay tribute to Serai Daniela’s departed mother as well as a chance to allow my daughter to see her daddy wrestle.
As for competing regularly again? I doubt it, but never say never as there could be a future opportunity like this that I can’t resist the urge to hit the ropes again.”
Christy: Except for Mariah and T-Bone, are there any other talent from your indy runs you still keep in contact with?
Xion: "Not really, outside of those who came back as regular contracted talented in ZXWWF and GZWA."
Christy: What about our current talent? Who surprised you the most after becoming a part of the GZWA roster? Or maybe there was someone you really wanted to see become a part of the company?
Xion: "In no particular order, Genesis, Carnage, Mei Long, Mike Bradley, Amanda Cortez, and everyone in our growing tag team division. To be honest, everyone currently in GZWA shows promise in one way or another, then there's others whose stars shine brighter than the rest. I don't want to feed any egos, but I think we have a very well-rounded roster. If I may add, I think that we have one of - if not THE best women’s divisions in the business today."
Christy: Well, we have a well-rounded roster, a unique crew working in management and backstage and heads full of ideas... What is next for the company? What jaw dropping feats you want GZWA to achieve in the future?
Xion laughs, "Hopefully more live shows within a month, but we're slowly improving on that format.
Seriously though, I would like to see our brand extend further into the world of professional wrestling. It makes me proud to see our wrestlers recognized in other promotions for their hard work and expertise in their craft. Who knows, maybe a joint-show with one of our affiliates would be a fun concept to try at least once."
Christy: I am saddened that our time has come to an end and we have to wrap up this interview. It was truly an absolute pleasure to be a part of this interview and I hope that this isn’t the last time I get a chance to pick the brain of the Fighting Dreamer. Is there anything you would like to say to the fans watching the broadcast or rewatching this on GZWA.com?
Xion: Thanks again for having me on board. It’s a rare treat that I get to do an interview like this that I don’t have to hold true to my on-air persona. I hope this sheds some light into who I am and what I do in our little corner of the wrestling world.
I only ask my fans and the fans of the GZWA Nation to continue supporting us and we’ll gladly return the favor with high-quality, top-notch professional wrestling on each and every broadcast. I invite you all to see me lace up the boots once more at Golden Reign Elite Pro. It’s going to be great show from top to bottom and I’m honored to have the chance to work with so many talented wrestlers with this degree of impressive pedigrees.
GZWA’s break will be over shortly and we’re going to come back better than ever. I know our roster of talent are well-rested and eager to come back in full force.
Christy: Thank you so much once again, Xion, for taking time out of your hectic schedule and talk to us and share moments from your very rarely seen and heard personal life. I like to thank everyone from the GZWA nation tuning in tonight. As always, I am your host, The Rockin’ Interviewer Christy Hemme and this has been a very special live edition of GZWA’s Hot Spot. Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.
The camera zooms out a bit, showing Christy shaking hands and exchanging smiles with the owner of GZWA as the scene cuts to black.
