OOC: I apologize for the length. It’s supposed to also serve as an intro into the characters universe.
WHEN A PLAYER GETS PLAYED
Isaac Childs was a man used to getting whatever and whoever he wanted whenever he wanted. He was blessed with it all; striking good looks, disarming charm and a multi-million dollar trust fund ready to kick in four years from now on his 41st birthday.
Women to him were nothing more than sexual beings to be conquered. The list of women who climbed in an out of his bed was long and illustrious. They ranged from young bimbo’s to successful business executives to hardbodie’s from the gym and everything in between. In fact, it had become so easy for him to score that he had recently upped the stakes and began focusing on married women.
The carousel of women that shuffled through Isaac’s life had not just become monotonous to him, but even his father Isaac Sr.-senior partner of Childs, Pelham and Krutcek Law Firm in West Los Angeles-had become tiresome waiting for his oldest son to find a good woman and settle down. It was one thing for Isaac to be nothing more than a womanizing model known more for his partying ways than his work ethic, but the fact that he had yet to give Isaac Sr. a grandson to carry on the Childs name had become a problem.
Still, Isaac blew off the family drama placating them just enough to keep the credit cards, the multi-million dollar beach mansion and the Lamborghini paid for.
Everyone knew Isaac was going to coast through life due to his father’s hard work. The plan was that once he tired of the jet-setting and womanizing, he’d find the perfect woman and settle down just in time to cash-in on his trust fund. He’d then take over one of his father’s many business ventures-most likely the hugely successful transportation company Isaac Sr. built from scratch-and settle into domesticated bliss.
But like just about everything else in Isaac’s life, he wasn’t prepared for the surprise around the corner; in this case, he wasn’t prepared for Karla Maxwell-Parks.
•••
It had been close to eight months since Isaac first laid eyes on Karla squatting more than 400 lbs outside at Gold’s Gym. It had been a while since a woman had stopped Isaac dead in his tracks. Even more than that, it had been some time since he was this smitten by a black woman; but Karla was indeed a vision. Dressed in nothing but a canary/white bikini and white thong-sandals, she came off like an Amazonian warrior. She was everything he never knew he wanted and he was determined to possess her like he did every other woman in his life.
Unfortunately, Karla wasn’t anyone’s possession. She savored her freedom and independence and was not about to let any man possess her. But like just about every one of Isaac’s hookups, Karla was immediately attracted to his gorgeous face and shredded body. She knew the moment she made eye contact with him at Gold’s that she was fucking him and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
Since then it had been a wild ride through both peaks and valleys. Karla really cared about Isaac but she wasn’t ready to fall in love with a man so arrogant and self-indulgent. To Isaac, he had finally met his equal in Karla. And it became even more apparent that Karla was the one once he brought her home to meet his family. Like Isaac, the Childs clan had all fallen in love with Karla and her free-spirited nature.
For Isaac, his relationship with Karla seemed to be progressing at a terrific pace; until a bottle of Eternity inside her medicine cabinet changed everything.
•••
It was a cool and crisp southern California Wednesday morning as Karla laid relaxing on top of her soiled Egyptian silk sheets smoking a joint that had been given to her by one of the wrestlers at her gym. She felt nothing short of a nuclear holocaust at that moment could ruin the tranquility mixed with the sexual satisfaction she was experiencing.
She slowly opened her eyes to see Isaac standing at the foot of her bed holding the bottle of cologne with a frustrated and confused look on his face. “Whose shit is this,” he asked.
Without a moment of shame or hesitation Karla responded, “It’s my friend Landon’s. He must have left it here.”
“WHAT THE FUCK IS A LANDON?”
Karla looked up at him shocked and annoyed. “First of all Isaac, this may not be a mansion in Malibu, but it is my house. And you don’t EVER speak to me as if you own me, much less in my own house. If you want to have a dialogue, we can have a dialogue. If you want to lose your shit, grab your clothes and get steppin’. But either way, you respect me Isaac or you can step your ass out that door.”
Nobody spoke to Isaac like that; much less a women who he just made cum with the thunder like he just had done with Karla. “Wait a minute…you just dropped a bomb that some other man leaves his cologne here in your house and I’m supposed to be okay with this shit?”
Karla just stood up in a sitting position letting out a sigh trying to find the right words to keep the situation from blowing up and out of control. But the longer she sat silent, the madder Isaac became.
“You fucking him,” he asked both gently and deliberate.
“Yes Isaac; I’m fucking him. And I’ve been fucking him for almost a year now. Do I ever give you shit about women you fuck when I’m not around? No! And just for the sake of honesty and full disclosure, I have another man named DeSean I’m fucking too!”
All Isaac could do was drop to the floor sitting with his head in his hands. He thought about was how wrong he had been about Karla. She seemed like the perfect woman who had been waiting her whole life for Isaac to just come in and sweep her off of her feet. But the reality was that Karla was basically him in female form. And it was at that very moment Isaac realized that he was the player that just got his ass played by one of the best.
•••
For days, he just felt sick. He couldn’t eat. He didn’t bother going to the gym because all it did was remind him of the thirsty bitch that played him hard. And he waited and waited for Karla to call him, but she never did. He even tried replacing her with several one night stands hoping they could get him over the pain. But the longer he went without seeing Karla, the more he felt dead inside. She filled a void that had been empty all of his life and now it was empty once again.
He sat on the floor in his living room listening to Adele break his heart even more. He stared at his phone contemplating if he could live in her free-spirited world of hedonism where monogamy had no place. After hours of heavy thought and sporadic tears, he dialed the phone.

It’s been far from perfect but Isaac had become somewhat content with the dynamic of his relationship with Karla. They seemed happy in their arrangement but he did have ulterior motives. To Isaac, if he could just play the part, run the course, eventually Karla would relent and realize that she had the perfect man and go with it. He would also be sure to subtly remind Karla of the wealth at his fingertips.
If Karla had had mildly noticed a diamond necklace in a display window, it would somehow end up on her neck merely hours later. Isaac believed that subtle displays of his wealth could somehow coerce Karla to eventually take fortune and security into account when deciding her future. At least that was his thought process when Karla invited him to escort her to a dinner in San Diego to celebrate the pending nuptials of one of her sorority sisters.
•••
She hadn’t realized it but it had been more than three years since Karla had seen Laci Chambers. They had Face-Timed and even gotten on Skype a few times so it made the time between somewhat un-noticeable. They were inseparable back during their reckless days leading the Cardinal swim team at Stanford. Since then they had gone their separate ways; Karla with her impressive career in bodybuilding and fitness and Laci becoming one of the youngest ad exec’s in the history of Donna Karan in New York City.
Laci had become engaged to her boyfriend over a month ago but hadn’t had the chance to pull herself away from her job until now. She and Rob had flown to her hometown of San Diego just after the New Year to share the joy with her family and friends. So seeing Laci was truly a delight for Karla after all this time.
•••
It had been a very pleasant evening. Dinner was perfect. They had all skipped out to the lounge outside of the Wonderland Ocean Pub where Laci and Karla sipped their wine while the men enjoyed a couple of Cubano’s Rob had brought with him. It was well over an hour before the subject of The Slammer bubbled on to the surface.
“I was so bummed I missed you in New York Karla,” Laci coyly expressed. Karla smiled and continued to sip her wine. She had a layer of concern in the back of her mind knowing that her recent jump into professional wrestling would come up; especially since Karla had missed Laci when she made her GZWA debut in New York City of all places.
Furthermore, even though her relationship with Isaac had gotten off to that shaky start, things have settled smoothly since. In fact, the only real disagreements the two had as of late all seemed to center on Karla’s wrestling career-or beginning stages of.
Isaac hated the schedule and the travel. He hated that at times Karla was too sore for physical intimacy. But perhaps his biggest complaint was that he at times felt as if he was dating a brute. To him, Karla’s life seemed so impressive; she came from a proper, wealthy family, graduated with honors from Stanford, a successful bodybuilder and fitness model and driven entrepreneur with the beginning of a fitness center franchise. When he introduced her to his family, all of this was mentioned. What wasn’t mentioned was the wrestling and he feared the day it came up with them.
Over the past couple of weeks Isaac constantly brought up his desire to settle down and start a family-and that just couldn’t happen if Karla was getting tossed around wrestling rings all over the world. He was growing more and more concerned even contemplating possibly walking away if Karla didn’t at least offer him a time-frame for which they can base the rest of their lives on. What he just wasn’t seeing was that Karla had no desire to walk away from pro wrestling. She was just having too good of a time and nobody was going to come between then; much less an immature spoiled brat like Isaac Childs.
“I gotta see ya wrestle Karla. When do you think you’ll be back east again?” Laci asked. Karla smiled, “Well I’m flying to Florida this week. After that, I’m not sure.”
Laci and Rob were both so fascinated with Karla’s decision to wrestle. Unlike Isaac, they thought it was amazing and impressive.
“When Regina sent me the pics of you wrestling, I was amazed. I was all like, DAMN! That’s my girl right there!” Laci boasted.
Rob continued on, “I gotta admit. When Lace showed me the photos, I didn’t believe that was the Karla she had been telling me about all these years. But seriously Karla, I really think it’s great what you do and I look forward to seeing you wrestle in person one day.”
Karla looked over at the familiar look on Isaac’s face. Rob and Laci weren’t familiar with smiling façade but Karla knew exactly what was happening. All the wrestling talk was driving him mad. It was all he could do to just burst out and let everyone know what he thought about The Slammer and her wrestling career.
Laci continued, “Well, you just make sure Rob and I have front row tickets Hon the next time you wrestle in the northeast.”
Politely, Isaac finally decided to chime in, “Well, let’s just not get too ahead of ourselves. I mean, yeah, it’s all fun and all, but let’s not take this whole Slammer-business too seriously.”
Karla looked over at Isaac wide-eyed as Rob and Laci also began feeling the tension a bit as Isaac continued.
“Karla is a beautiful and successful woman with so many irons in the fire that we just can’t really take this whole wrestling thing too serious.”
It was all Karla could do to maintain her composure.
“Uh, excuse me Isaac, but I think I’m doing just fine and just to be crystal clear, I happen to love what I do and I plan on doing it for a while.”
Maybe it was the wine mixed with the animosity over Karla wrestling. Or Isaac could have been conceivably at his wits end over his inability to control Karla in the same manner in which he had successfully controlled every other woman in his life. But he chose that particular moment to send a very strong message to Karla.
Isaac looked over at Rob. “Rob, tell me something. What would you do if Laci confessed to you right here and now that she did Roller Derby on the weekends and at times your relationship would have to take the proverbial back seat to her Roller Derby shenanigans? How long would it be exactly before enough was enough?”
Rob took a slow, wide-eyed sigh as if he was choosing his words wisely. Thankfully, Laci chimed in with a voice of reason.
“Forgive me Isaac, but would it be the same if you were a pro football player and Karla was the one competing for your attention?”
“It’s not the same Laci,” Isaac dismisses.
“How is it not the same?” Laci continued.
“Because she’s not a pro football player; she’s a pro wrestler. Do you ever watch pro wrestling? She’s only wrestling because of her look. It doesn’t take intelligence to get beat up in skimpy clothing for the pleasure of perverts!” Isaac countered.
Everyone has their threshold; and Isaac had come dangerously close to Karla’s.
“Are you being serious right now Isaac?” she asked.
“Yes Karla. I’m being very serious! You’re better than this. You’re and educated woman and you’re making the conscience decision to engage in activities fit for a mouth-breather!”
“Do you know how retarded you sound right now?” Karla belittled. Isaac just turned away knowing immediately that he wasn’t going to win this argument. He was out-manned and facing off against an enemy that held stronger to her convictions than he did to his. Not to mention that the time and place as well as the company was less than ideal.
Thankfully Rob had enough sense to find a believable ejection cord. “Well, this sounds like a conversation that neither Laci nor myself should be privy to not to mention that we have an 8:30am flight tomorrow morning. And while I can’t speak for my beloved, I have to say that if I have any more wine, they’re going to need a crane to get me out of bed,” he chuckled attempting to divert the tension with levity.
Laci and Rob got up and hugged Karla while shaking hands with Isaac. After a couple more minutes of exchanging pleasantries the valet returned with Rob and Laci’s rent-a-car and the two drove off.
For the next several minutes there was nothing but silence between Karla and Isaac. Finally the valet arrived with Karla’s Mercedes. Both enter the car and buckle up. The silence continues as they make their way back towards LA.
“Do you want me to drive you to a train station or a rent-a-car?” Karla asked nonchalantly. Isaac paused for a moment and takes a breath.
“A rent-a-car? You don’t think you’re over-reacting just a bit?”
“Oh I’m good Isaac. I just have no intentions of spending the next hour or so in a car with you. So where do you want me to drop you? Car service or train station?”
It was that moment Isaac realized he had pushed too far. He even considered that they his relationship with Karla may have run its course. He took a deep breath realizing that at least for the moment he had to let Karla process her anger. He couldn’t believe that this woman was speaking to him in this manner. He couldn’t have possibly imagined that his day would end being dumped in the middle of downtown San Diego by the woman he thought he was falling for.
But it was reality. And the reality truly set in the moment he watched the back end of her AMG E43 drove away.
