(the camera fades from black to a scene outside a rather fancy restaurant in the middle of a smallish looking town. The camera pans up and the sign over the door says: “Los Altos Bar and Grille. There are people out on the patio and a few benches out on the front walkway up. The patio and the front entrance are on the same side of the building. Off to the right side of the building a couple of cars looking for spots wander the parking lot to it. The door opens, a couple of people come out and then another couple come out and as the camera pans closer we see that they are Vespertine and and Sinjin. Sinjin is dressed in black dockers, a blue collared shirt, brown loafers and Vespertine is dressed in a white strapless thigh length golden gown with black high heels. Her shoulders are bare so she puts on a sort of light blue shrug and they continue out the door. It is nearing sunset. The sun is still out but the shadows from the trees and the mountains are long as the sun goes down behind the mountain. The sound comes up and we come upon the conversation they are having)
V: Ah good meal. Thank you my sweet. That was good.
Sinjin: No problem babe. Anytime.
V: Hey. Do you want to walk downtown a little bit?
S: Sure that would be cool.
(they pick up a few mints from the candy dish on the porch railing and go down the steps going in the direction of the downtown Los Altos area. Los Altos isn’t a big city. In fact it’s one of the smallest towns in the Bay Area with a population of just over 2000. Some people call it quaint. This quaint little village is at the bottom of the Peninsula that leads up from San Jose to San Francisco. It is about 40 minutes each way. It is your typical small village/town, lot of little homey shops that sell trinkets and homemade stuff and a lot of delis and little mom and pop places to eat and hang out and talk. There are several toy stores and somewhere on the main street is a Starbucks but in this village, with the possible exception of Starbucks, there are no main stream big commercial vendors anywhere like McDonalds, Toys R Us or Burger King. Vespertine and Sinjin get to the corner of main street and then make a left and go up the street making their way past small cafes and a quilt store.)
S: Babe, what’s wrong?
V: Nothing is wrong, why?
S: You just seem….distant tonite. Not your normal self.
V: Have you been watching GZWA in the past few days?
S: Sorry Ves, I haven’t no. I have been out of town on a business meeting. We landed a huge buyer for Xerox yesterday. They already gave me a great bonus. Which is the reason for dinner tonite and then I’m getting a new car. Ferrari I think. (pause) Naw, that’s not my style. What do you think?
V: Whatever you want my sweet. As long as it doesn’t change you.
S: Hmmmm….what’s up. That’s not the typical Vespertine answer.
V: Well going back to what I asked you before. So….you haven’t been keeping up to date on GZWA lately?
S: Not since you wrestled that fatal four way matcha week or so ago. You won and I’m proud of you.
V: (distantly) Hmmm….yes I did. (snapping out of her reverie) Anyway, Riot Control is coming up in another week or two. And I have a match against a former friend/rival of mine, Molly Holly. Like this last match she and I were, we were partners with Porsha and we went against the team of Chyna, Amanda and Laura Jackson
S: Ah…. Chyna, where do I know her from? Didn’t you used to wrestle her in that other indie you were, what was it’s name: VCW!
V: Don’t remind me. Actually… no, there is was someone like her, as brutish as her but called herself Gold… or Silver depending on how her mood was that day. Anyway with this match at Riot Control, my partners again will be Molly and Porsha against Chyna, Laura and Amanda…
S: Oh that bitch!
V: (she laughs) You said it. I didn’t.
S: Well now you know what you have to do. You have to win. It will suck if you lose.
V: Yes it will. But I’m in the match with everyone because our president Xion thought it best to settle all old scores at the same time. Never mind the fact that just me and Chyna alone are the main women’s event and we are who the fans want to see. I forgot who opened their mouth but now, we have a lethal lockdown match and I have partners.
S: Um….ok.
V: Well. Whatever. I have bigger problems right now.
S: Like what?
V: How to end the career of Amanda, and how to get my one on one match with Chyna.
S: What about Laura?
V: What about Laura?
S: What do you want to do with her?
V: I don’t know yet. She is part of “their” team so I have to figure out something to go against her.
S: And have you come up with anything?
V: Not with her yet no. With Chyna and Amanda its practically like shooting fish in a barrel.
S: How so?
(she explains to Sinjin the weaknesses and strengths both women have and how she could exploit them in the ring as well as the gameplan she has going in to the feud with Amanda and Chyna. She finishes talking after several minutes and they sit in silence for a little while.)
V: So there is all that.
(Again, there is a moment of silence between them. He leads her to a café table and lets her sit down and sits down opposite her and stares into her eyes.)
S: Well you know, if it were me and if I were a wrestler, I would take the biggest one out first.
V: I have been thinking of that yes. It’s gonna be hard. I partner with a person who I respect but doesn’t trust me, someone who hates my guts because of a past relationship I had and on the other side of the ring, I have two women gunning to end my career here in GZWA. I never figured on this whole deal being this complicated. I question why I wrestle sometimes.
S: That’s like your whole life. Wrestling. I watch you every time I’m home and pray for you every time I’m not. I’ve watched all your matches: boiler room brawl, bull rope, I Quit, TLC, FCA etc….
V: I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I’m good at what I do: pissing people off. Maybe it’s because I open my mouth too damn much. I somehow wish I could go back to my home federation WCW, the federation I started out in and pick back up there. Things were so much easier. You know who was bad, you know who was good, and you knew where you stood with people.
S: Yes I know but WCW closed its doors years ago. GZWA is your home now and like before in WCW, you have to make your mark, rule with an iron fist and become a legend in GZWA as well. (he shrugs) But far be it for me to tell you what to do. You can do anything you want. But can you hear your parents now? You know what they would say about this.
V: I know exactly what they would say about this (she mocks in a short choppy Asian sentences.) “Wrestling bad for you. We told you so. You come home. Be good girl. Have normal life. Also, get rid of Sinjin. He no good for you.”
S: Yep, there is also that as well. And that’s even though they have known me far longer than they have known Amanda. (he pauses) Did you ever have Amanda meet them?
V: We didn’t get to that point. And no I’m not going to tell my parents anything. I’m only 26, I love this sport. I have always told you my reasons why.
S: Yes you have. But I have also seen the side effects as well, the times when you are in the hospital, the times you are in pain, the times you have to take painkillers just to mask that pain.
V: All right let me ask this then. If you were me, what would you do?
S: This isn’t like selling copiers for Xerox. I was on the high school baseball team. That was a long time ago. Baseball isn’t like wrestling. I would imagine you take many more hits and get hurt a lot more.
V: And just what are you telling me? That if it were you, that you couldn’t decide? Is that it?
S: (sighs) No….Yes….I don’t know. That’s exactly it. I know what I would do. But that is me. This isn’t my decision to make.
V: And so it comes back to me. All right. What do you THINK I should do?
S: I hate seeing you in pain. I hate seeing you take those painkillers. I hate seeing you in hospitals. I hate seeing you bleed all over and Buddha only knows how long we have known each other. But to be fair I also know how much this sport means to you and how much it runs in your veins. But you do what you want, do what you need to, you have always done what you want and if you need to get revenge on Chyna and Amanda so be it.
V: (puts her head in her hands) Oh Sinjin. That so doesn’t help me.
S: Think about what I said. I’ll get us a couple of coffees and a dessert of some kind.
V: (Lifts her head slightly) Mint mocha please. I think I need something smooth going down.
(he nods and gets up and goes off screen to go inside the shop. She keeps her head down for a minute or so and then lifts it up and looks around. She is bleary eyed but when she sees the camera, she addresses it.)
V: Next week at Riot Control, Chyna, Amanda, Laura, don’t expect me to be the fluffy little girl you think I am, don’t expect me to back down or back away or sit down for any of you. In this match I’m not eye candy anymore. I’m not arm candy. I’m not all sugar and spice anymore. I want this win and I WILL do everything in my power to get my team the win. It’s a Lethal Lockdown with weapons in the ring. I have been in matches like this before. Some I have won, others I have lost but I want you three to beware of this: I’m not afraid to bleed, I’m not afraid to be broken. Dying is a day worth living for. We ARE the main event so let’s give the people out there the show of a lifetime for the Divas here in GZWA. You will feel death by diva but in doing so, you will have cemented your legacy in stone just as I get one step closer to being champion and Hall of Famer. So… bring it. Bring it all. Bring it on. And be prepared for the fight of your life. I’m going in and I’m giving 120% just like I always do. I’ll bleed if I have to, I’ll break if I have to but not before I make you bleed and not before I break you. This is not just a fight, this is not just a battle. This is a war. So let’s make sure we give them a war they will NEVER forget. And one team will lose. So be it. In losing you will learn, in learning you will grow stronger and when you grow stronger you become a better person. I will NOT be the loser in that match. Chyna, Amanda, I will be there, you can bet on it.
(Sinjin comes back out carrying two cups of mocha with him. He sits down and stares at her. She gives him a weak smile. Camera fades to a point in the distance between them. Camera fades to black)
